Speaker: Xicotepec Project

At our first meeting in October, Rotarian Jim Peterson, from the Iowa City A.M. Rotary Club, gave a presentation on the Xicotepec Project. This project is a collaboration between the Rotary Club of Xicotepec and Rotary District 6000. Since the first contact in 2001, this collaborative humanitarian enterprise has provided the opportunity for Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, university students and others from the U.S. and Mexico to work together in carrying out dozens of Rotary projects in Xicotepec de Juárez, Puebla, Mexico.

Club & Project Planning Meeting

At our last meeting, we brainstormed ideas for our next project. It was suggested that we partner with a local organization to develop a project that got us actively involved with the youth.

Here is a breakdown of the basic framework of the project idea:
  • Ask local organizations about projects that we can engage/participate in quarterly
  • Offer to donate <$1000, with the possibility of more if we can secure a District Grant in Spring 2023 (we understand that a grant cannot be funded for an on-going project)
  • Allow organization to work with their core team to develop a plan or idea in the form of a proposal--> they will send the proposal to the Rotarian to present at the end of the next meeting on Wed, Nov 8.
  • As a club, we will decide which project best aligns with our core values and begin working with that organization
Here is a breakdown of the organizations we wish to "tap" and the corresponding Rotarian responsible for initiating contact and gathering a proposal to present:
  • Boys & Girls Club - Brad Colton
  • Marion Cares - Erin Steffen
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters - Rotarian pending
  • Catherine McAuley Center - John Gruber-Miller
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace - Katie Wilford
  • Youth Parents Network - Mariah Obiedzinsi
  • SE Linn Community Center - Gene Johnston
This list is not exhaustive. We value your input and suggestions. If you know of an organization that we could partner with, please reach out to me so I can add it to the list. Please initiate contact with the organization that you suggest and gather a proposal to present at the end of next meeting on Wed, Nov 8.

For your reference, here are our club core values:
  • Address inequality
  • Empower youth
  • Advocate for safety and inclusion
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and input.
