Speaker: Washington High School Interact Club

On May 10th, we were visited by the Washington High School Interact Club. They gave an informative presentation about their club mission and activities.

The Interact Club is sponsored by Rotary and brings together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self.

They meet on the 1st & 3rd Friday of each month. The club consists of 20-30 members. It’s focus is community outreach, service, Sunday evening meals, snack pantries, concession stands, etc. Sunday evening meals are held at the 1st Presbyterian Church, and are well attended.

The club food pantries are made by the woodworking teacher/woodworking class and are set up in various classrooms around the school. They provide food to those in need, improve daily life, energy, and academic success. The snacks are limited to one per student, per day, and the pantry has a captcha that leads the students to our rotary pantry for a more sustainable and substantial food source. The club is looking for donations from local businesses, HACAP, etc… for their food pantries.

Volunteer opportunities with Interact Club are on Fridays. They meet at Washington High School from 1-1:30. Topics include Rotary, service, RYLA, among other things. You can also help them by spreading the word and donating.

Service Project: Planting Trees

On May 24th, the wonderful City of Marion crew led our club, and a few more volunteers, in planting about 20 trees in Donnelly Park.

After the derecho, our club, and many other clubs in the Midwest and Rotary District 5970 contributed $10,000 worth of trees throughout Linn county. This was the final push to get those trees planted.

We couldn't be more grateful to everyone who donated their time, dollars, labor, and cans and bottles for this effort!
