Rotary Youth ExchangeWelcome to Iowa, Lucia!
Lucia will be attending Washington High School in Cedar Rapids and is hosted by the Swaney family. She is from Spain and enjoys music and playing basketball. Lucia is also a very good painter.
Our Rotary club will host her. Her sponsor club is Rotary Club de Majadahonda in Madrid. Lucia's grandfather is a Rotarian and her father founded the Rotaract club in Denia.
Lucia wrote, "I am very excited to be an exchange student for a whole year like my father did so I will be able to know a new country and learn English very well as well as their culture."
Speaker: Mugisha GloireAt our first meeting in August, our club heard from Mugisha Gloire, Founder and Director of United We March Forward (UWMF), a local nonprofit organization in Cedar Rapids.
His presentation was moving and memorable. Mugisha immigrated from the Democratic Republic of Congo at the age of nine and has lived in Cedar Rapids for over 20 years. He felt compelled to be part of the community and help more immigrants and refugees become self-sufficient.
UWMF focuses on community development for immigrants and refugees. In 2019, UWMF served 40 families. They are now serving over 460 families.
